Father’s Day – 2011

Nostalgic pieces are almost a cliche on the days that honor our forebearers but that fact does not change the desire and need to think on those we hold so dear. Today is Father’s Day. For me, a day of gratitude, sorrow and memories.
I started out life way ahead of the game – when people say life is unfair, I know that is true. It was overwhelming unfair in my favor. I was born to parents who loved God, each other and me. It doesn’t get any better than that on this side. Today I think of Dad. He was a good and generous man – sometimes quick to lose his temper but also quick to make it right. His humor was contagious and he made people comfortable because he liked them and listened to them. I remember watching him shave, when I was a very little girl, and singing – “Many brave hearts are asleep in the deep, so beware – b-e-e-e-ware” getting lower and lower on each note. That enchanted me. Much later he saw that I had a new dress for my first formal event and some years later, welcomed a young man into our home. Not long after, Dad walked me down the aisle to begin my marriage to Paul.
